Uhuru Kijiji is a freedom village on Zanzibar for conscious people, curious travelers and digital nomads looking for nature, quiet and community. We offer rental bungalows, long-term stays, retreats, workshops and on-site projects to make room for new thinking, inner growth and living free—just a two-minute walk from the Indian Ocean. Uhuru Kijiji, Freedom Village for Digital Nomads and Travelers, located on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, in the small, peaceful town of Bwejuu.

We love the freedom here, detached from personal and societal constraints. Our little oasis of tranquility is a place of confidence, growth, and creativity – a natural haven with countless palm trees, banana plants, lush greenery, and a vegetable garden. Every day, you can enjoy a fresh coconut straight from the tree if you wish.

We offer our small „Freedom Village“ for rent to mindful and like-minded people: individual brand-new bungalows, cozy rooms, or even the entire property – perfect for workshops and retreats.

We are a small coworking village for travelers and digital nomads who value conscious living.

You can come alone or with friends – we can accommodate up to 12 people. We offer spacious double bungalows and a standalone house with two bedrooms. Smaller rooms for two are also available. For long-term stays, you can rent your own house with a kitchen and bathroom on a weekly or monthly basis.

Here, you’ll find the perfect place to work and relax. The open living space is available to all residents as a meeting point and community area.

We respect Zanzibar’s local culture and collaborate closely with locals as well as newcomers from around the world. Located just one hour from Stone Town – and only a one-minute walk to the Indian Ocean – our hidden paradise lies behind the palms of Bwejuu. The famous kitesurfing hotspot Paje is just next door.

Our stylish, air-conditioned rooms feature large private terraces, bathrooms with hot water, air conditioning, ceiling fans, safes, and minibars. The large double bungalows offer 40 m² of living space, making them ideal for monthly rentals. Each room can accommodate up to four people, and a fully equipped communal kitchen is available for self-catering.

We are among the few places with a brand-new solar power system, making us independent of power outages. Wi-Fi, 24-hour security, a spacious dining and work area, and a covered rooftop terrace with ocean views are also included. You’ll find hammocks under the palms for you and your friends to relax.

Community and individuality in harmony with nature

We live consciously, speak mindfully, treat resources with care, and eat with awareness. All of this is deeply rooted in our vision of community life at the Freedom Village. We live free from substances like alcohol or nicotine.

We offer like-minded people the opportunity to build their own small, charming bungalow on our property. The maximum size should not exceed 40 sqm. This allows us to create 4 to 6 more bungalows and build an inspiring, supportive, and freedom-loving community. For shared living, there’s a communal area with a beautiful rooftop terrace, a shared kitchenette, a garden, and soon, a pool area.

Two to three times a year, we host retreats, workshops, or conferences on various topics. What happens, when, how, and with whom will always be updated on our events page. You’re welcome to be part of these events. During those times, the Freedom Village opens up to participants, and renting out the bungalows is also possible.

With Uhuru Kijiji, we’ve already created a small but special place of peace, serenity, and comfort. We live in harmony with nature and in co-creation with our wonderful fellow villagers.
